HISTORY
Ancient MacNeil clan is said to have settled in Barra in the 11th century. King Robert the Bruce was supported during the War of Independence by Neil Og, 6th Chief while Kisimul Castle became home to them. ‘The Turbulent’ Roderick 15th chief was later arrested for privacy against the English Ship and successfully defended himself. Barra was then Crowned Crown Barony in 1688 with the 18th Chief later supporting Claverhouse’s campaign in 1689. The MacNeils of Barra supported the Jacobite Risings in 1715 and 1745 however Barra was sold by the 21st chief in 1838. Barra now belongs to the present chief and was repurchased again in 1938.
