HISTORY

The Hamilton clan were considered one of the most important lowland clans, founded in Renfrewshire where they were granted lands by King Robert the Bruce of Scotland. The Norman name is thought to have been taken from Walter Fitz-Gilbert of the village of Hamilton or Hameldune in Leicestershire, who moved to Renfrewshire. He is first documented in a 1294/1249 charted given to Paisley Monastery.
