HISTORY
The Burns clan is strongly associated with the Campbell clan. The early Burns family are documented back to around 1296 in Cumberland. THe name was shortened from the original Burness,. Alternative spelling has been altered to Burnes, Bourne, Burn, and Bernes for example.
The Burns tartan is predominantly red, with green blue and yellow strips. A modern family sett from it is thought 1930-1950. The Burns tartan for the clan is different from the more recent ‘Robert Burns check’ pattern.
